Last year, Dallas voters approved $300 million in improvements to Fair Park, including $140 million slated for renovations to the Cotton Bowl. The promise of a spicier Cotton Bowl helped seal the deal that kept one of the most treasured events, the annual Texas-OU football game.
On Wednesday, the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma jointly announced that they have agreed to extend their historic Cotton Bowl rivalry through 2036.
The agreement continues a tradition that began nearly 100 years ago in 1929, with the last one occurring on Oct. 7, when OU ran away with UT 34-30.
“There's simply nothing like the Allstate Red River Rivalry game, and for all its history, tradition and glamour, it has to stay in the Cotton Bowl,” said UT Athletic Director Chris Del Conte. said in a statement. “So many memories have been made by generations of fans at this iconic stadium surrounded by the spectacle of the State Fair of Texas, and we are excited to continue that into the future. I am.”
Under the agreement, the Dallas Sports Commission and Dallas Tourism Public Improvement District will increase annual payments to each school, but terms were not disclosed.
Overland Partners was hired to lead the design efforts for the Cotton Bowl renovation, working with McAfee3, Modus, Norman Alston, Fair Park First, Dallas Parks and Recreation, Visit Dallas, OVG360, and AECOM to design the venue. Repairs and renovations were carried out. .
The two-year project aims to inject “new vitality” into the iconic venue and create an “unforgettable fan experience”.
Plans include expanding the stadium's concourses, enhancing circulation, improving food and beverage options, and expanding restrooms. The expansion of hospitality areas and premium environments is planned to “enhance the overall Cotton Bowl fan experience and foster positive economic impacts for future improvements to Fair Park and the entire community,” the statement said.
