A Dallas man is recovering in the hospital after being shot during a carjacking. His wife said the incident happened the day after Christmas, as their children watched from inside the house. Latasha did not want to reveal her face or her last name because the person who put her husband in the hospital was still at large.
It was the day after Christmas when Latasha's husband, Christopher, dropped her off at work and returned to their apartment on Vickers Street in Dallas. A home surveillance camera installed outside the apartment captured what happened next.
A man was seen approaching the driver's side of the car. He then fired into the window and ordered Christopher to come outside. Latasha told NBC 5 that her four young children were watching from the window.
“They knew when he would pull over,” she said. “They're always so excited, like, 'Daddy's back!'” And they're surprised they didn't run out. If they had run out, it would have been them. ”
Dallas police said they responded to the call around 11 a.m. and that the suspect had driven away by the time officers arrived. Christopher was taken to the hospital. Although he is thankfully alive, he is seriously injured.
“He's had four surgeries. So at this point we're just praying for the best. He can't walk. He's talking, but he's just as scared for our family as I am.” said Latasha.
She said the man left with her main transportation and Christmas presents. Most of the time, he took away their peace of mind. Latasha said her family has been harassed by someone in the past and she believes it may be connected to this incident. But she can't think of any reason why someone would try to harm them.
“We’ve only been there three months,” she said. “We don't know anyone. We don't interfere with anyone. We don't interact with anyone. We just stay with ourselves.”
She said she is now focused on her husband's recovery and the safety of her children. Once he is released from the hospital, they plan to focus on finding another place to live.
Dallas police said they do not have a suspect in custody. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 1-877-373-Tips.
