the current: That said, it is what it is and a standard is a standard. That's a Super Bowl win. Mr. Prescott found himself facing the same wall that once criticized his immediate predecessor.
But while Prescott enters this offseason on the heels of an embarrassing loss in the playoffs and a 2-5 playoff record, he is literally (statistically) one of the best quarterbacks in team history. His MVP-like regular season earned him his third Pro Bowl appearance and his third straight 12-win season.
But like I said, this is Dallas and it's not good enough to meet the standards. As he would readily admit, there is a legend: Aichman hasn't given up on him yet.. He will likely remain in a Cowboys uniform through the 2024 season and beyond, but his future after next season will depend on how the team deals with his looming $62 million cap hit. .
An extension would solve the problem financially and secure Prescott for the time being. However, they could also choose to simply restructure, a mechanism that does not require negotiation and is built into the current agreement to turn the $62 million cap into a $21.8 million surplus cap.
No matter how sliced the bread is, Prescott will remain in place and all eyes will be on what's going on behind him on the depth chart.
future: There are a lot of questions out of the building as to whether the Cowboys will use a premium pick to select a quarterback in 2024, but I personally don't think so and the presence of Trey Lance doesn't think that makes much sense when you consider it. The team was adamant that it would select a developmental quarterback in the 2023 NFL Draft, and expressed regret for not doing so until that point, and then again.
Their compensation last season was to send a 2024 fourth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for Lance, which to me is literally the same as making a pick in April of this year. Considering they used one of this year's picks to acquire him — but Lance also has the advantage of not being a rookie but still very young. He is also a former No. 3 overall pick.
Cooper Rush is a steady hand behind Prescott, and Rose is well-deserved. Delivered on time in 2022but it's also true that the 30-year-old has reached his ceiling and the purpose of bringing in Lance was to develop him so he could challenge the rusher for the QB2 role.
Lance will show his true potential for the first time in this fight during training camp this summer, but he has learned from both McCarthy's quarterback school and Prescott and Rush as he rebuilds his brand at the NFL level. It will be a very real opportunity to show off.
By the way, both Rush and Lance are in contract years, assuming the Cowboys don't pick up the latter's fifth-year option.
All of this makes the backup battle at QB one of the most interesting to watch in 2024.
