Wednesday morning news about the Dallas Cowboys.
Jerry Jones details his 'all-in' approach to the offseason – Staff Writer, Dallascowboys.com
Whatever chips are left in the Cowboys pile last year will go to the center of the table in 2024.
Will he remain a free agent?
Jones said: need to be “destroyed” When considering ways to achieve better success in 2024 in the offseason, free agency comes up as a possibility. Big names are expected to hit the free agent market at positions in need, and more than a quarter of the Cowboys' active roster is scheduled to become free agents, so it's likely that the Opportunities to achieve records may exist.
Here's what Jones had to say about these thoughts:
“It would be devastating not to have free agency like we did last year,” he said. “I think you can expect us to have some influence here and be involved in some free agents, subject to the right free agents that we can get under the right contracts.”
Disappointment of “deserved” fans
Asked about the fans' disappointment following yet another sudden playoff exit, Stephen Jones expressed plenty of sympathy for them and how he should feel about the team's future. Without a model of winning consistency, Jones says there's a good reason fans feel that way.
“We've had three good years with a 12-5 record, but we were a huge disappointment in the postseason. So until we do something — and that's to have another great year and make the playoffs.” to be successful in — that will remain,” he said. He said. “Until you get it done, there’s no way they’re going to trust you unequivocally…Until we compete at that level and get the job done, there’s going to be doubt, and rightly so. .”
Jerry Jones claims he didn't need to convince himself to keep Mike McCarthy – Charian Williams, Pro Football Talk
It didn't seem like much convincing was needed to keep Mike McCarthy as head coach.
Jones met with McCarthy for more than three hours after the Cowboys' early exit from the playoffs, but it was too early to determine whether McCarthy was eligible for another year after winning three consecutive 12-game regular seasons. It was long enough.
“This is not a 'tell yourself' thing,” Jones said at the Senior Bowl, via Nick Harris of the team website. “Obviously, there are a lot of things to consider. Everyone has a choice. This is something I'm very comfortable with. I've felt very good this past year because of Mike's work. Team were responding well. We were all disappointed that we didn't win the Green Bay game. We had a much better vision than that. All of us. But there are also things we can move forward with.”
The Cowboys didn't want to give Dak Prescott three play-callers in three seasons after one year of his career. Prescott is among the five finalists for league MVP, and receiver CeeDee Lamb is a finalist for Offensive Player of the Year.
“We’re at a critical point with Duck,” Jones said. “Dak has gotten better since Mike came and I think we can expect that improvement as well. There’s still a lot to gain in terms of Dak growing with Mike. The evidence shows that. It all makes sense because there's more to get there, more pluses for Dak, and the decisions we're making now affect a lot of other things we're doing. It's true [McCarthy] return. “
Dan Quinn promoted as 'creepy' manager fails to hire Lions coach – Mike Fisher, Cowboys Country
Dan Quinn still has an opening day in Washington after the top candidate withdrew.
The managers have narrowed down their head coaching candidates, with the finalists being Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and Cowboys defensive boss Dan Quinn, who is currently interviewing in DC.
Well, I was a finalist. Why is Johnson just out, choosing to stay in Detroit?
Strange development: Will new owner Josh Harris not be willing to pay Johnson's asking price? And could that make Quinn more likely to leave Dallas for Washington?
The former view comes via ESPN's “Insider” Adam Schefter, who said Tuesday that Washington is “terrified” by the salary Johnson is demanding for his first head coaching job. ” is reported.
It looks like a pro-Washington face-saving spin. (The Washington Post offers a more sensible reason: Johnson wants to win the Super Bowl, and Detroit could get Johnson to the Super Bowl sooner than Washington.)
Johnson and Quinn are both on Seattle's shortlist and bring much different things to the table.
Quinn, 53, is a generation older than Johnson. Quinn is the Super Bowl head coach and coordinator.
What's next? Dak Remains, Trey Lance Will Be Tested – Staff Writer, Dallascowboys.com
Is Trey Lance really the future at quarterback in Dallas?
The post-Aikman era was an unmitigated disaster until Tony Romo, an undrafted free agent and as much criticized as the No. 1 overall pick, won the starting job in 2006. Romo went on to set franchise records and remained a presence for the Cowboys until his injury. In 2016, the door was opened for Dak Prescott to have the best rookie season of any quarterback in franchise history.
The Prescott era started with such a bang that there was no looking back.
the current: That said, it is what it is and a standard is a standard. That's a Super Bowl win. Mr. Prescott found himself facing the same wall that once criticized his immediate predecessor.
But while Prescott enters this offseason on the heels of an embarrassing loss in the playoffs and a 2-5 playoff record, he is literally (statistically) one of the best quarterbacks in team history. His MVP-like regular season earned him his third Pro Bowl appearance and his third straight 12-win season.
future: There are a lot of questions out of the building as to whether the Cowboys will use a premium pick to select a quarterback in 2024, but I personally don't think so and the presence of Trey Lance doesn't think that makes much sense when you consider it. The team was adamant that it would select a developmental quarterback in the 2023 NFL Draft, and expressed regret for not doing so until that point, and then again.
Their compensation last season was to send a 2024 fourth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for Lance, which to me is literally the same as making a pick in April of this year. Considering they used one of this year's picks to acquire him — but Lance also has the advantage of not being a rookie but still very young. He is also a former No. 3 overall pick.
