Game 1 of the World Series begins Friday at 7:03 p.m. at Globe Life Field in Arlington, pitting the Texas Rangers against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Thousands of people in the stands will try to munch on hot dogs, Boomstick Burgers, Pizza Dawgs and brisket croissants, but organizations at the home base of both teams are asking fans to come hungry. We are calling on people to remember and help those who are in need.
During the World Series, the North Texas Food Bank is teaming up with the Tarrant Area Food Bank for a “friendly competition” with St. Mary's Food Bank in Phoenix. The goal is to determine which metropolitan areas can raise the most money to “conquer hunger” in their communities.
The organization said both metro areas face high rates of food insecurity, and that the 970,000 people in the DFW region suffering from food insecurity “would fill Globe Life Field more than 24 times over.” It added that one-third of that number were children.
High inflation rates have placed even more stress on economically challenged households, with both NTFB and TAFB now providing access to more meals “than at the height of the pandemic.”
If you would like to support a Texas Rangers fan, you can visit strikeouthungerntx.org to make a gift in honor of the Rangers. If you are a Diamondbacks fan, you can donate to St. Mary's Church at https://www.firstfoodbank.org.
All funds received will help each city feed their communities, and winning communities will receive bragging rights. According to the organization, “The losing food bank CEO will wear the winning team's jersey for one day.”
Please put it on the list.
