Triton Digital has released its second annual U.S. Podcast report. This report provides insight into the evolving U.S. podcast landscape throughout 2023, including listening habits and audience demographic data, top podcasts, networks, and the debut of the Triton US Podcast Ranker.
According to the report, monthly podcast listenership continues to grow, increasing by 12% over the past two years. In 2023, 40% of the US population will report having listened to a podcast within the past month. This growth is reflected in all segments of the population, especially those who have been slow to adopt podcasts as their preferred medium.
Other notable findings include:
- Older Americans and women are listening to podcasts faster, with listeners aged 55 and older increasing by 22% and female listeners aged 18 and older increasing by 19% over the past two years.
- The top podcast genres in 2023 were news (22% of downloads), true crime (18%), and comedy (15%). 67% of True Crime podcast listeners were women. 62% of comedy podcast listeners are male. 58% of news podcast listeners were male.
- The top selling networks in 2023 on the Triton US Podcast Ranker are SiriusXM Podcast Network in first place, NPR in second place and Wondery in third place.This year's top podcasts are NPR News Now (NPR).

This report incorporates data from multiple sources, including the IAB Tech Lab-certified Triton Podcast Metrics service, which measures server log data from the Triton Omny Studio platform and other industry hosting platforms. Also includes data from the Triton Podcast Metrics Demos+ solution, which provides demographic and audience characteristics for podcasts of all sizes, and the Demos+ survey of 12,000 monthly U.S. podcast listeners conducted in partnership with Signal Hill Insights.
