It won't be long until members of Haverhill High School's 1973-1974 hockey team are assembled on the 50-man selection team.th To celebrate the program's first anniversary, one of the organizers revealed details from decades ago.
A celebration will be held on Saturday, February 17th at Haverhill High School's Veterans Memorial Rink along with the game against Shawsheen. Haverhill High School's first varsity goal scorer, Richard “Spike” Sprague, revealed some secrets during a visit to WHAV's “Win for Breakfast” program last week.
“You can see why I scored because he was put on emergency duty because the starter was out. He was in the net wearing pads and regular skates. Basically he was “He fell down, so I put it in the net. I don't think it was the hardest goal in the world to score,” he explained.
Sprague said this isn't the only historical mark on the game.
“The first guy is goaltender Ted Vassaly, who is a good friend of mine. He was the goaltender and got the first shutout, winning that game 9-0.”
Sprague has been trying for months to include all of his teammates in the celebration.
“We had 22 players and unfortunately we lost two. What I'm looking for are these five players, Mark Roy, Tom Lloyd, John Purcell. , Rich Cooke, Joe Parker. If you're there, please contact me, we'd love to be there,” he asked.
Players who moved to California, Texas and Florida will be returning to the city. The 73-74 Haverhill High School hockey team is celebrating its 50th anniversary;th Sprague said there was a short-lived effort a few years ago.
“I looked up that there was a hockey program in 1929. It was more of a club team. They remained active for three years, but they disbanded. So it wasn't until Haverhill started a team again. 40 years later, that was our team,” Sprague said.
Haverhill High School 50th Hockey Day on Saturday, Feb. 17, begins with the first varsity gathering in school history at 3 p.m., followed by a ceremony at 3:30 p.m., followed by a game against Shawsheen at 4 p.m. After the game, Sprague said. He has been involved with Haverhill High School's hockey program for the past 50 years and was invited to “talk about hockey” at the American Legion Wilbur M. Comeau Post 4, 1324 Main Street. Ta.
