Just a few months after Brett Maher proved to be toast, Aubrey became the opposite.
“He's butter,” Prescott said with a laugh. “Butter Aubrey. Smooth. Has been since the day he showed up.”
When told of his kicker's new nickname, special teams coordinator John “Bones” Fassel had only one question about it.
“Butter, huh? Maybe it's because you're in a good mood?” Fassel asked with a smile.
The late, great Stuart Scott would be proud.
But the truth is, Aubrey is in really good shape, and that's delicious.
Surpassed franchise record set by Dan Bailey's legendary feetAubrey currently has 16 consecutive made field goals, and is three shy of breaking the league's all-time record for longest streak at the start of an NFL career (held by former Cleveland Browns kicker Travis Coons).
This was a near-perfect start to his NFL career, though his only failure was his first extra point attempt in the eventual win against the New York Giants. No one would have blamed him if he, a rookie with little kicking experience, had gotten down on himself in that moment.
But he wasn't and has been perfect ever since.
Moreover, he has only one experience… One …Of his 35 kickoffs, the rest were touchbacks thanks to a stick of dynamite hidden in his right shoe.
“He's very calm on the sideline,” Fassel added. “After missing his first kick in the NFL, the PAT against the Giants, he was very calm. His demeanor remained the same throughout the game. When I asked him how he was feeling physically and mentally, , It's always been like that.'' , “Coach, I'm fine. I'm fine.''
“…I'm proud of his effort and I'm very proud of how coachable he is. I don't coach him too much. I don't coach him too much. I'm very proud of his effort and I'm very proud of how coachable he is. 'The thing is, he's just swinging. It's natural without looking.' I haven't changed anything about him since he's been here.
“We just worked on the operational part. [the kick] …We still have a long way to go, but it was a great start. Let's keep it going. ”
Fassel was reticent about the ongoing losing streak itself, giving way to superstition, but at this point, regardless of when the streak ends, Aubrey is ready for the long-term commitment the position has long sought. It has already proven itself worthy of being called a solution. .
Of course, that pick would come with an asterisk associated with his need to continue having a strong season and have a good chance of proving himself in the playoffs, but what he's already accomplished is cannot be denied. The former soccer player turned exclusively to Cowboys camp. It's been a year since he first attempted a place kick en route to a franchise record while aiming for a league record.
Fassel is right that Aubrey still has a long way to go, considering the Cowboys are only six games into the regular season. Still, the Cowboys have scored 154 points this season, with 60 of those points (39%) coming from Aubrey.
That's peak Dan Bailey, that's it.
“He's an athlete,” Prescott said. “He's an athlete who plays as a kicker. He was a professional. He was a professional in soccer and he was a professional in other soccer leagues.
“And now here in the NFL, yeah, he's mature as hell. Just buttered up, smooth. No surprise.”
Mike McCarthy wholeheartedly agrees.
“He can beat it,” he said of Aubrey's current record. “He's very consistent. It's fun to watch him work. He's off to a great start.”
McCarthy, who began his NFL coaching career in the early 1990s, has seen just about everything, especially in the fact that his career includes coaching coaches like Mason Crosby.
But Aubrey so far is something completely different.
“I don't know if I've ever seen a start like this in my time,” McCarthy said. “What a kicker.”
At this point, he's pure gold – Kerrygold.
