The suspect in the Dallas shooting that killed four people, including a toddler, died by suicide after a police chase, authorities said.
On Sunday afternoon, Byron Carrillo, 21, opened fire on a home in southeast Dallas, according to the Dallas Police Department. When officers arrived around 4 p.m., they found five people shot. Three adults died at the scene. Two children, a 15-year-old girl and a 1-year-old boy, were taken to a nearby hospital.
The infant died within hours. The boy was listed in stable condition late Sunday, police said. The adults were later identified as Jose Lopez, 50. Karina Lopez, 33 years old. and Vanessa de la Cruz (20).
After the shooting, Carrillo immediately fled the scene, stole a car heading southbound, and led authorities on a high-speed chase, police said. Eventually he crashes the stolen car into a ditch and starts driving away. When police approached, he took his own life.
The Texas Ranger Division is investigating the “in-custody death,” according to a statement from the Dallas Police Department.
Authorities have not released a motive for the shooting. On Sunday, police issued a statement saying they believed the incident was “isolated” but did not provide further details.
In 2021, Carrillo was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and was forced to wear an ankle monitor. Police said he turned off the monitor before Sunday's shooting.
There have been at least 39,800 gun violence-related deaths so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit research group that tracks gun violence statistics using public information. 1,569 of the deaths were children and teenagers.
