Downtown Dallas has a brand new park thanks to a public-private partnership between the Dallas Department of Parks and Recreation and the Downtown Dallas Park Conservancy (DDPC). DDPC is a nonprofit organization that promotes the long-term development and support of public parks within urban centers. Their vision is to nurture and protect neighborhood parks in downtown Dallas, creating an urban environment that inspires moments of inspiration and restoration. According to the latest market data, the population of downtown Dallas has increased by 71% over the past decade. Currently, more than 13,000 residents live in downtown, and more than 80,000 residents live in the city center (within a 2-mile radius of downtown).
Opening in September 2023, the four-acre Harwood Park features expansive green lawns, more than 200 trees, event venues, and pavilions. The park also features outdoor dining spots and a “ghost mammoth” playground structure that harks back to the days when these giant creatures once roamed. Harwood Park is the last of four priority parks that DDPC is building in partnership with the Dallas Department of Parks and Recreation. The park site was previously a collection of surface parking lots and vacant buildings in the historic district.
