episode notes
This week, host June Thomas discusses two biographies of author Adam Sisman and the late spy novelist John le Carré. In an interview, Adam explains how he was able to pull off such an exciting project and how he was granted so much access to le Carré (real name David Cornwell). I will tell you. He also talks about his friendly but complicated relationship with le Carré and some surprising discoveries that almost derailed the entire project.
After the interview, June and co-host Isaac Butler will share research tips for nonfiction book projects.
In an exclusive segment on Slate Plus, Adam explains the importance of in-person interviews.
