According to a ruling handed down Wednesday, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones must undergo a paternity test, ESPN reported.
This is the latest development in an ongoing legal dispute between the billionaire owner and 27-year-old Alexandra Davis, who claims to be his biological daughter.
In 1998, Jones' mother, Cynthia Davis, and the Cowboys' owner allegedly reached an agreement in which Jones would financially support the family unless it was revealed that he was the father. Mr. Jones denies the charges.
Alexandra Davis had sought to invalidate the contract in a 2022 lawsuit, but later dropped the case in favor of having Jones undergo a paternity test to prove her claim.
Ms Davis' lawyer Chris Hayes said Wednesday's ruling by Judge Sandra Jackson was a “huge victory”.
“Alex is now in a position where he no longer has to hide his truth or live under the control of fear, and perhaps he will finally find peace. He will be given the freedom from other judges to follow the law. We hope that the family will receive similar benefits,” the lawyer said.
Jones' relationship with Davis' mother is said to have taken place in the 1990s, when football powerhouse Jones was already married to his wife Jean, and Davis' mother was also married.
Lawyers representing the 81-year-old mogul have argued that a Texas law requiring genetic testing is unconstitutional and said Cynthia Davis' then-husband should be legally presumed to be her biological father.
His lawyer says the 27-year-old has already received “millions of dollars” from Jones.
The original settlement reportedly called for Jones to pay Cynthia Davis $375,000 and a lump sum from Alexandra's aging trust.
