Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic is having perhaps his best season as a professional. Statistically, there is no doubt about it. Heading into Sunday's matchup with the 76ers at noon on WFAA, Doncic is averaging 34.5 points, 9.7 assists and 8.9 rebounds per game.
He was a triple-double machine even as the Mavericks were trying to find their footing and mesh after a spate of injuries early in the season.
So, is Doncic the best candidate for MVP? Not completely, at least not yet.
The Mavericks' 34-26 record and eighth-place finish in the Western Conference appear to be preventing Doncic from becoming a candidate for the NBA's highest individual honor. But according to the latest odds and rankings, he's still within range.
Doncic will get another chance to showcase his game on a national stage when the Mavericks host the 76ers. In the meantime, here's where he stands with the latest odds and predictions.
“Kia MVP Ladder” on NBA.com
Doncic was ranked No. 5 on the latest Kia MVP Ladder rankings compiled by NBA.com. Celtics star Jaysom Tatum is fourth, former two-time Bucks MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo is third, Oklahoma City breakout star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is second, and reigning NBA champion Nikola・Jokic follows in first place.
What's the difference between Doncic and the top four? Apparently it's a record for the Mavs.
“I understand he has scored 25 or more points in nine straight games,” Michael C. Wright wrote. “But with flashy highlights and huge number That aside, Doncic will need to lift Dallas out of play-in tournament territory to move closer to the top of this list. ”
Betting odds vary from sportsbook to sportsbook, but as compiled by Sports Betting Dime, it appears to be a three-player race: Jokic, Gilgeous-Alexander, and Doncic.
As of this week, the best odds for each player are -135 for Jokic, +230 for Gilgeous-Alexander, and +650 for Doncic.
Where has Luka finished voting so far?
