This week, host June Thomas talks about the crossword puzzle creator whose new book is called “Anna Shechtman.” The Mystery of the Sphinx: Continuing the Feminist History of Crossword Puzzles. In her interview, Anna talks about her experience writing crossword puzzles in her teenage years and her subsequent experiences working together. new york times Puzzle maker Will Shorts. She also discusses the subjectivity of “common sense” and recalls arguing with Shorts about which words and phrases deserved puzzles.
After the interview, June and co-host Ronald Young Jr. talk more about crosswords and the ever-growing pool of “common sense.”
In an exclusive Slate Plus segment, Anna shares the rewards crossword puzzle creators receive. She also talks about her early interest in crossword puzzles, as well as the more sensitive subject of her struggle with anorexia.
