The Philadelphia 76ers defeated Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday, overcoming a late-game onslaught from the hosts to win 120-116.
It wasn't a great start for Philadelphia, as the Mavericks started 11-0 and Nick Nurse was forced into an early timeout after the Sixers went 0-for-6 on their first possession. As if that worked, Philadelphia sank five of its next six field goal attempts to tie the game on a 13-0 run, shortly after the Mavericks used their own timeout. I decided to do it. Tyrese Maxey then kicked into a new gear in his hometown. Whether it was on the perimeter or driving to the rim, the Mavs were completely unprepared to deal with Maxey, who scored 17 points in the first period to lead the Sixers 32-22 heading into the second period. Ta.
Now, in a completely shocking and never-before-seen turn of events, things get difficult with Maxie taking a break. Less than two minutes into the young guard's second start on the bench, the Mavs went on a 10-2 run to even things up again. This is going to be a battle. Thanks to a great second period from Tobias Harris, Philadelphia held a 56-51 lead into halftime.
Frankly, the game might have been more lopsided if the Sixers had made more 3-point shots — they made 4-of-22 (18.2 percent) from beyond the arc in the first half. Ta. Harris must have heard my complaints about problems from long distance. He sank two catch-and-shoot triples in a row, helping the Sixers build up their largest lead of the day (15 points) in the third period. .
Things took a scary turn with four minutes left in the third when Maxey took a shin on the back of his head during a fall. He was able to get off the court on his own, but on the way back to the locker room he appeared to be in severe pain. Thankfully, he quickly returned to the bench. He returned to the game early in the fourth period with the Sixers holding a 90-76 lead. Exhale.
Kelly Oubre Jr.'s pregame Red Bull performance helped the Sixers lead the rest of the game. Until the middle of the third inning, they had only scored four points. By the time the final whistle blew, he had scored 21 points. Oubre's outburst and a few last-minute clutch plays from Harris helped the Sixers outscore Luka Doncic and the Mavs made the final push for a 120-116 victory over Philadelphia.
The Sixers will continue on the road Tuesday night against the Brooklyn Nets.
Until then, go to Bellringer.
Tyrese Maxey: 24 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals
Maxey seemed to be feeling great being back in his hometown of Dallas. The Mavericks didn't have a player fast enough to keep up with Maxey, so he used that advantage whenever possible. The Mavs had no answer for finding space on the perimeter or dancing straight to the rim past defenders. It was the perfect example of the speed and movement control that Maxey said he's been working on this offseason. You can't watch this game (or any of his other performances this season) and deny the immense progress he's made in these departments.
Maxey single-handedly outscored nearly the entire Mavs team in the first period, scoring 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field, and already had two rebounds, three assists, and two steals for Dallas' total of 22 points. did. Sunday's playing time was 12 minutes. By halftime, Maxey led the field with 19 points.
He struggled in the third period as the Mavs started double-teaming him a few feet outside the perimeter. With four minutes left in the fourth, Maxey was hit in the shin in the back of the head mid-fall. He was able to get up from the floor, but on the way back to the locker room someone grabbed the back of his head and appeared to be in severe pain. Thankfully, he quickly returned to the bench and came on as a substitute, returning to the game in the fourth period. Exhale.
Maxey finished Sunday's contest with 24 points, two rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Tobias Harris: 28 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal
After a quiet first period with two points and one rebound, Harris went 5-of-6 from the floor in the second period, scoring 12 of the Sixers' 24 total points in the second period. . This was a great example of what is considered an accepted truth at this time. When Harris is just being aggressive, he has success, but when he takes too long and overthinks, he doesn't do as well. Harris was aggressive in the second game and helped the Sixers survive the period.
He carried that attitude into the third period, sinking two straight catch-and-shoot triples to help the Sixers build a 15-point lead in that span. Harris continued to score here and there through the fourth inning, but his biggest moment came just minutes into play. He competed for offensive rebounds and set up Niko Batum's 3 as the Mavs tried to fight back late. Shortly after, he sank two clutch buckets in the final minutes, a triple and a pull-up jumper, helping the Sixers outrun the Mavs' late-inning offense.
Harris finished Sunday with a team-leading 28 points on 11-of-19 shooting from the field (3-of-6 from long range). He also had five rebounds, one assist, and one steal.
Paul Reed: 13 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block
On Sunday afternoon, Reed was again removed from the starting lineup and was replaced by starting center Mo Bamba. And again, he did a great job. I'm not a fan of Bamba being our starting center right now, but there's no denying that Reed looks like he could play a role on both ends of the floor off the bench.
In just over 15 minutes of play in the first half, Reed scored 11 points on 4 of 5 shots from the floor (1 triple) and 2 of 2 from the foul line. He remained aggressive on the boards, grabbing six rebounds by halftime, including two on the offensive end.
Reed finished the game with 13 points on 5-of-6 field goal shooting, seven rebounds (two offensive), three assists, one steal, and one block.
Kelly Oubre Jr.: 21 points, 5 rebounds (3 offensive), 4 assists, 1 block.
Oubre was a late addition to Bellringer's options Sunday, and for good reason. Before the game, he was 3-of-11 from the floor and 0-of-5 from long range before the Red Bulls finally got going. After scoring just four points through three and a half periods, Oubre finished with 14 points in the game. From the end of the third to the beginning of the fourth is only about six and a half minutes. He capped off his late heroics by making one of two crucial free throws to put the Mavs up four points instead of three with just five seconds left.
Oubre finished Sunday with 21 points (again, after only scoring four points midway through Game 3). He also had 5 rebounds (3 offensive), 4 assists, and 1 block.
