Since the Dallas Mavericks lost to the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday, they have made two moves to solidify their roster for a playoff berth.
The first move occurred immediately after the game, converting AJ Lawson's two-way contract to a standard contract. Lawson is easily one of the Mavs' best options for a final roster spot, and he gives the Mavs much-needed wing depth.
Dallas was also interested in Spencer Dinwiddie before he signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, and was reportedly looking for a backup point guard.
The acquisition of Dante Exum partially alleviated the need for a backup guard, but they pivoted to signing Lawson.
Their second move came today when they signed former Los Angeles Lakers winger Alex Fudge to a two-way contract. This roster spot was freed up after Lawson's contract was converted to a standard contract, and the Mavs currently have an 18-man roster. Dallas' three two-way players (Brandon Williams, Greg Brown III, Alex Fudge) are not eligible for the playoffs, but all three have potential and some upside potential. .
Earlier today, Lawson addressed the media and was clearly excited about his new contract. Now that Lawson has a regular contract, he has a new goal.
“My next goal is to try to break into the rotation and help the team win,” Lawson said. “My next goal is to keep building, keep polishing, get better every day and show the team that I’m ready when my time comes.”
Lawson showed improvement when he played every game in December, but hasn't played consistently since then. Currently on a standard contract, Lawson is working on proving he can be trusted as a rotation player.
If Tim Hardaway Jr. continues to struggle, Lawson could be added to the rotation sooner rather than later. The Mavs need new energy, and Lawson's defense and hustle could help. His goal will be difficult to achieve this season, but it's still a great goal for the young winger.
