Welcome to the weekly podcast with longtime Anchorage Daily News horticulture writer Jeff Lowenfels and co-host Jonathan White. Consider this a supplement to Jeff's weekly ADN Gardening column and his popular series of books.
This week, Jeff and Jonathan celebrate the longer days of spring in Alaska. But as the sun gets warmer, they start thinking about the effects of global warming.
This week's episode begins by discussing recent scientific research that warns that global warming could threaten the survival of dung beetles.
Next, we'll explore various natural indicators that indicate it's safe to plant outdoors (and indoors). In Alaska, the size of birch leaves is a reliable clue. Jeff also emphasizes that now is an ideal time to complete spring tasks, such as cleaning up after the dog and shoveling snow around the greenhouse entrance.
Finally, we'll answer listener questions about composting.
