With the release of the iOS 17.4 update, Apple introduced a number of new features to eligible iPhones, including the introduction of auto-generated transcripts in Apple Podcasts.
For Apple Podcasts users, the latest features make it easier to listen to and understand episodes, even if you're unfamiliar with the dialect. Similarly, creators no longer need to spend time drafting transcripts because Apple uses AI to handle that part for free.
If you recently updated your iPhone to iOS 17.4, here's how to make the most of the new transcription feature in Apple Podcasts.
Read while playing the episode
The best part about Apple Podcasts' new Transcript feature is that it lets you read the episode aloud while it plays, highlighting specific words and sentences to help you understand what's going on in the episode. Additionally, users can also click on text to quickly jump to specific parts of the podcast.
You can also select part or the entire transcript and share it with friends and family via messaging platforms such as iMessage, WhatsApp, etc. Users can also translate specific parts of the transcript without leaving the app. However, only some languages are supported at this time.
How to enable Apple Podcast transcripts
If you have an iPhone running the latest version of the Podcasts app on iOS 17.4, transcripts are automatically enabled. Just search for the podcast you're looking for, select it, and the transcript will appear automatically. If you would like to view the complete transcript as plain text, click the hamburger menu in the top right corner and select the “Show Transcript” option.
There is currently no way to hide your transcript. However, clicking the icon on the right will replace the transcript with more episodes in your playlist.
Easily skip or find the content you're searching for
Transcripts also make it easy to find sentences or specific words in your podcast. If you're revisiting an episode, just search for a word or phrase to quickly jump to a specific part of the episode.
Transcripts are designed to be easy to read and understand, especially for people with hearing loss, and the transcript feature makes it easy to understand episodes. If you have a problem with a particular part of your transcript, you can report it directly to Apple by simply long-pressing that part of your transcript.
Overall, Apple is trying to entice iPhone users to switch to its native Podcast app instead of third-party platforms like Spotify with the new Transcript feature. Additionally, the auto-generated transcript feature should encourage more creators to publish content on his Apple Podcasts.
