- Live from Earth, Live from Melbourne.
- The crew at Berlin label and collective Live From Earth do things their own way. And it works. Over the past decade, this team has become a major force in the city, combining a killer ear for techno and house with a sense of humor and pop sensibility, proving appealing to audiences and scenes around the world. became. That's why we chose Live From Earth for our latest cover story. His DIY attitude, humble origins, and tenacious spirit are everything we love about underground dance music. Accompanying the cover story, this R.A. The podcast features two of the label's chief artists, DJ Gigola and MCR-T, the latter of whom are also known as horsegiirL'smy barn my rulesThe hour-plus recording is a handy microcosm of the label's sound, running through modern and vintage techno with plenty of raunchy vocal samples and hip-hop a cappella. Intense but never too hard, catchy but never predictable. It's all fun, that's the group's guiding principle.
What have you been up to lately?
MCR-T: As for both of us, in the last month before the Australian tour, we have been on separate tours with different goals. I was trying to take some much needed time off and focus on recharging for the coming months. Sadly or thankfully (I'm not sure anymore), it turned into an all-out writer's camp for me to collect and produce singles for my next album project. ≠ (not the same). Additionally, I work as a label manager for myself and Clara Cuve's new label SESH. SESH will release her first 22 track VA release in April. We also had the opportunity to work with local Miami talents MJ Nebreda and La Gooney Chonga who are trying to bridge the connection between Miami and Berlin. Additionally, Gigola and I ended up performing for our friends in Los Angeles who host my favorite American party, Tunnel Worldwide. Shout out to them. And I was able to conclude my stay with a very enjoyable closing at New York's infamous BASEMENT. So while my stay in the US was meant to be relaxing, it turned out to be a really fun little business trip with friends. We are now in Australia halfway through our tour and are waiting to conquer Australian hearts one piece at a time. DJ Gigola: I have been traveling to North America for music work and some shows in Mexico, Miami (where I met JJ aka MCR-T), and LA (where we played together in Tunnel). I was traveling in Central America. Then we took a little vacation and went to Costa Rica, reunited in Houston, and flew to Australia together where we did some individual shows and some shows together. Unfortunately, our set at Pitch Festival didn't happen, but we were still able to enjoy other Australian tour stops, connect with the local community, and meet friends here.
Where and how was the mix recorded? And can you tell us the idea behind it?
DJ Zigola: It was really difficult to synchronize both tour schedules, so we spontaneously decided to do back-to-back gigs during joint club nights here in Melbourne. We both love the idea of mixes being spontaneous, live, and resonating with the audience, so we felt like all we had to do was plug in TASCAM, press record, and go with the flow. JJ and I work best together when we have an audience to cater to. This mix also represents our collective Live From Earth, so it was important to us to stay true to our roots. Surrounded by live, sweaty and fun club nights. By a friend (as you can see from the photo taken on the exact same night). MCR-T: Yeah. Gigi spoke first. Staying true to who we are and how we got to where we are. The idea of DIY is fun and spontaneous. That's Live From Earth DNA and Berlin ID. Taking risks and chances. (Is the glass half full or empty? You choose.) Hahaha! Taking into account the content played, we wanted to introduce our colleagues' tracks, which expressed our mood at the moment of recording. An eclectic style with sexy rhythms, sassy touches, and a fiery bassline that drives the dancers. As crazy as I was that we ended up back to back. Additionally, we've thrown in countless unreleased gems for future projects. So if you enjoyed some of the tracks in your IG snippets or story posts, they'll get more playtime in your mix.
What club or party had a big influence on you as an artist?
DJ Gigola: For me, it's hard to narrow it down to one club or one party. Growing up in Berlin and having the privilege of being naturally surrounded by the city's rich club culture had, and still does, have a huge influence on me as an artist. Especially when you're a teenager, affordable parties, diverse and open subcultures, access to spaces, and a local community you can relate to are so important to developing yourself, and Berlin has just that. was there. This is where JJ and I connected, and it's what connects us as a label and collective. I grew up in Berlin's club culture and call it home. MCR-T: I think the first party that created his DIY mindset to achieve my goals was before I even joined Live From Earth. My brother and his Gen97 friends and I were hosting an illegal rave in a remote area on the outskirts of West Berlin. Then our dear friend Frederic also helped us in our efforts, as did many other locals in the area. We built the club's infrastructure on an abandoned site. A temporary palace that allows us to create spaces that were inaccessible to us at the time. This was from 2015 to 2017, when he had little money, so he improvised. It was a lot of physical work and I was nobody. But we pulled people in because we were doing it for the culture, and people liked the risk-taking approach. That's from the hosting and DJ side. As a guest, the place that taught me everything I know about my city's freedom-loving, free-spirited sonic culture is unapologetically Berghain. I have been a regular customer there since I was only 18 years old. It influenced my sound and sense of fashion at a time when techno was not yet commercialized. At a young age, I had the privilege of having a club in my backyard filled with some of my favorite industry legends, and I spent countless nights and days on that dance floor listening to my favorite artists. I studied and took notes. As the years passed, my desire to one day decorate the speakers with my own creations on Sundays slowly solidified, and I began creating them in my bedroom studio. As a boy from Berlin who lives for culture, simply loves sound, and started from nothing, this is a great honor.
What social or political cause would you like the world to pay more attention to?
DJ Gigola: I would definitely encourage people to practice being more open, listening to each other, and trying to feel the other person's point of view, even if it feels uncomfortable. I am. Apart from that, spend less time online and more time IRL. MCR-T: Experiment and practice how to form an unbiased opinion and evaluate events in the world. Challenge the prevailing consensus and challenge the popular media. Make up your own mind outside of social media. Let's engage with each other. Communicate with like-minded people, but especially with people who don't share your views. In these socially explosive times, peacefully agreeing to disagree is the healthiest practice. Much hate and prejudice stems from a lack of communication. It doesn't have to be right. Don't impose your interpretation of right and wrong on others. Walk away and learn to agree to disagree. The discourse has become a bitter battle over who gets to repost and claim bragging rights about who said what first and when. So ignorant and so depressing. What are you looking forward to in the near future?
DJ Gigola: Aside from the obvious things (upcoming releases, shows, label showcases), this feels like a very transformative year for me. I have no idea how it will turn out, but I am so excited to fully immerse myself in the process and see what creative output and personal growth comes from it. He's also playing in a lot of territories he hasn't been to yet, including his South American debut at DAME Festival in Chile, his Gop Tun Festival in Brazil, and Baum Festival in Bogota. We are so grateful to be invited, welcomed, and able to connect, interact, and physically share the dance floor with communities from all over the world, far from home. MCR-T: I'm happy to be able to enjoy the ride wherever I go. On the flight from Perth to Melbourne, I was thinking about how fast everything is going and how much this means to me and how grateful I am to be here, in this situation. I had the humbling experience of crying mid-flight about how grateful I was to be able to do what I do. industry. I know that nothing in life is free. Nothing was ever distributed to us. We have always been the underdogs, so I am very lucky and grateful to have the ULTRAS community, my Live From Earth family, my hometown of Berlin, and my family friends and loved ones supporting me wherever I go. I feel that. I'm doing this for my people. I look forward to playing and playing with the community wherever I go. I look forward to sharing my take on sound while I'm on Earth. Every show is, for me, another opportunity to bridge the gap from being a random stranger rapping and singing into a microphone at a party to being a fun memory that I want to look back on and listen to in my free time.
