The Dallas Cowboys have converted quarterback Dak Prescott's $5 million roster bonus into a signing bonus, creating $4 million in salary cap space for 2024, a person familiar with the process said. dallas morning news. Prescott was scheduled to receive a $5 million roster bonus on Monday.
The Cowboys also added two additional years of nullity to the end of Prescott's contract. The gap year continues until his 2028.
Prescott's new cap number is $55.455 million, the second-highest in the NFL behind Cleveland's Deshaun Watson ($63.9 million) and ahead of Arizona's Kyler Murray ($51.4 million).
Prescott's base salary for the 2024 season will be $29 million.
Cowboys officials have publicly said they would like to extend Prescott's contract, but have not said when that will happen.
“Dak has been willing to work with us and we've had great discussions with him about his contract,” team executive vice president Stephen Jones said last week. “He is fully committed to working with us and we have also had personal discussions with Dak. Other than that, that is all we can say about our negotiations with him. We want to keep them private. We don't want to get involved in timelines or anything like that, but that's certainly our priority.”
Linebacker Micah Parsons and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb are also seeking new contracts. Lamb is in the final year of his rookie contract.
The Cowboys have talked about their cap constraints this offseason and have made several recent decisions to try and free up those constraints. Last week, the Cowboys cut receiver Michael Gallup, creating $9.5 million in cap space. These savings will not accrue until after he June 1st.
