Digital Humanities Meet-Up held an event on “Podcasting and VR Classroom” on March 14th in the JB Hunt Transportation Center's World Languages and Digital Humanities Studio, Room 207.
The meetup featured talks by studio researchers Larissa Rocha and Michael Hall, as well as an anchor demo by classics researcher Rhodora Venarucci. Rocha kicked things off by talking about her booth on World Languages and Digital Humanities Studio's podcast. She reviewed her podcasting best practices and spoke to attendees about how to reserve a podcasting booth. Rocha also shared examples of how instructors are incorporating podcast assignments into their syllabi and how they can schedule meetings for students to dig deeper into podcasts in tutorials.
Mr. Venarucci spoke to attendees about the podcasting challenge he incorporated into his course “CLST 4003H: Shopping in Ancient Rome – Podcasting the Past” as part of his ongoing project “Virtual Roman Retail.” assignment, Shop 'til you drop For podcasting, I assigned students the challenge of recording a 20-minute podcast episode about an ancient Roman store in small groups. Students can choose the genre/style of podcast they want to create, and can independently delegate group work (such as script writing, editing, and speaking) with Vennarucci's check-ins throughout the project. Ta. The students recorded podcasts using his RODECaster Pro in the podcast booth, and he edited the recordings in Audacity. The final product was then uploaded through Anchor and is now integrated into Spotify.
Following the podcasting segment, Hall gave a presentation about VR Classroom, formerly known as VR Club for Language Learning, which they founded with alumnus Jonathan Carmona. Hall shared that VR Classroom has worked with many language sections in the Department of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures to provide immersive learning experiences. There, students can use cooking apps, ImmerseMe, Language Lab and other applications. Hall concluded his presentation with a demonstration of one of the VR apps used in VR Classroom, with volunteer participation from Linda Jones, chair of the School of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures.
