FRISCO – The Dallas Cowboys have made a move to sign Dak Prescott. No, it's not “Movement of the contract”'…but a little bit of immediate help nonetheless.
As discussed in the Fish Report and Fish Podcast below, there's a lot of buzz in Cowboys Nation right now regarding the Cowboys' MVP quarterback. And this measure will not solve everything.
but …
ESPN first reported. the team converted To create cap space, Prescott will be paid a $5 million roster bonus as a signing bonus.
The added space is worth $4 million and will help the Cowboys close out recent minor league deals. (See Cowboys free agent scorecard here). The move also includes adding a gap period to Prescott's contract…which could be important as the two sides negotiate what to do with Prescott's contract long-term, which expires after this season. There is.
Prescott's cap number for the 2024 season is $55,455,000. …down from an inflated $59.4 million.
If Dak remains unsigned all year and becomes a free agent in the spring of 2025, that gap year (currently until 2028) could become a problem. For example, it would be a shame if he wasn't here in 2025 even though he still has a cap number. That's about $40 million.
But the stated plan is to extend Prescott's contract — which he predicts “will happen” — which would make the gap years moot.
