Orlando, Florida – This week on “Black Men Sundays,” host Corey Murray interviews David Smallwood, wealth management advisor at Northwestern Mutual.
Smallwood is partnering with the Nashville-based nonprofit Corner to Corner. The group aims to create 10,000 black-owned businesses within the next 10 years.
“We knew we had to find a way to not only help people save for the future, but also give back to the community and empower the community with some of these economic principles.The Wheel , I'm always looking for people who are already doing certain things and where I can lean into them and link arms with people who might be in a complementary lane to what I'm doing. .Corner to Corner is one of those organizations,” Smallwood said.

A corner-to-corner approach to tackling economic inequality includes holding financial literacy workshops to provide opportunities for young creators and new entrepreneurs.
“What Corner to Corner does is say, “The average black family is about one-tenth the average white family in terms of wealth in terms of economic empowerment.'' , so they said, 'You know,' that gap is costing the American people $1.6 trillion,” he said. “One of the ways we can bridge this gap is through black entrepreneurship. There's an intuitive, instinctive, instinctive, almost in our DNA within black people to want to be entrepreneurs and make things happen. So Corner to Corner said, “Let's empower them to do that.'' Let's create avenues for micro-entrepreneurship in the black community, and let's recycle that money back into the black community. That could be one way to close the racial wealth gap apart from the welfare system. “I'll give you some money and let's see what you can do.'' Transform your family's legacy by empowering you to become an entrepreneur or business owner. ”
