KCRW's Lost Notes podcast returns to explore stories and scenes from LA's historic soul and R&B scene

KCRW's acclaimed music documentary podcast; lost memowill return for a fourth season on March 13, 2024. Co-hosts Novena Carmel (KCRW) and Michael Burns (KCRW/KPFK/Artform Radio) guide her through eight very different and deeply human stories set against the kaleidoscopic LA backdrop . Soul and R&B scene from the 1950s to the 1970s.

• Gloria Jones was a gospel-trained teenage singer from Los Angeles, and her biggest hit, 1965's “Tainted Love,” was never hers. But she went on to lead a double life as a hit songwriter for some of the greatest artists of all time…her serendipitous rediscovery led to her coronation as the Queen of Northern Soul.
• Fela Kuti is known today as an iconic artist, innovator, and revolutionary…but in 1969, after a disastrous tour of the United States, he was bankrupt, exhausted, and in trouble with federal authorities. But a chance encounter changed his musical and political consciousness and gave birth to what we now know as Afrobeats here on the streets of LA.
• For decades, Ruth Dolphin was thought of only as “Mrs. Dolphin.” John Dolphin” – wife of the Dolphins of Hollywood record man who was murdered in February 1958. But now, for the first time, we're setting the record straight about Ruth's own unique and unsung genius as the leader of a resurgent and thriving LA. In the decades that followed, a musical empire was born.
