For a long time, Voice of San Diego has followed the story of the Logan Heights school.
This school has changed name and face in recent years. A beautiful new building is being built. Formerly known as Logan Memorial Preparatory School, it is now called Logan Memorial Educational Campus.
Logan Memorial has served residents for generations. During that time, its educational content and appearance have also changed. But as VOSD Podcast host Jacob McWhinney explained this week, through all of these changes, one thing remains the same. That means it has a bad reputation. It remains one of the most avoided schools in the district.
In 2015, San Diego Unified School District began a $200 million project to rebuild Logan Memorial. They marketed themselves as a “cradle to career” educational campus with childcare, project-based learning, and career preparation options, fulfilling a long-standing promise to residents.
But amidst the shiny new building, the question remained: “Is this the next Lincoln?”
Lincoln High School is a troubled school. This was also rebuilt by the prefecture. However, over the years, enrollment numbers and performance did not match the promises and resources put into its appearance.
So how can Logan avoid becoming “the next Lincoln”? McWhinney shared his report with co-hosts Scott Lewis and Andrea López Villafaña this week . At this recent meeting, Logan community members voiced their concerns to San Diego Unified Board Member Richard Barrera, building momentum for organized protests.
Also on the deck…
Fletcher scandal continues to worsen. The woman who accused former county Supervisor Nathan Fletcher of sexual harassment and assault appears to be having trouble maintaining momentum in her lawsuit. This week, Grecia Figueroa breaks up with her lawyer and Luis and López Villafaña discuss legal news. In the program, the staff will unravel the story.
It was the first day of opening. Hey baseball. But Petco Parks has also said nothing about its plans to legalize concession operations and protect workers after it was revealed that it harbored labor practices through concession stands.
We have a new theme song. I love it. I think the cheerful, classic yet progressive vibe is what inspires Bonhomie. I hope you like it too. We know it will take time to adjust. It'll be okay.
