Spagnola: Cowboys need youth in 2024 – Mickey Spagnola, Dallas Cowboys.com
Dallas' youngsters will play a key role in 2024.
Of course, he's only been a free agent for two weeks. One month left until the NFL Draft. A deal is still possible. But for the most part, for the Cowboys to have the luxury of having the best players at each position in the NFL, they need some raw youngsters to develop before their eyes, but this Easter weekend This may seem unsettling, but it is true. There are no golden eggs there.
Let's start with the offensive line. With two of the starting five spots open, players like Brock Hoffman, TJ Bass, Matt Waletzko, Josh Ball, and Asim Richards have no name recognition, let alone a primary backup opportunity. There will be a chance to raise it.
Rico Doodle, Malik Davis, Deuce Vaughn, Snoop Conner and Hunter Luebke all have once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, but there's no soul on the current roster that can match Dowdle's 96-year NFL career.
And at wide receiver, Jalen Tolbert, Jalen Brooks, Kavonte Turpin, Jalen Cropper, David Darden and Martavis Bryant will all have to compete for the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 spots. And with the exception of Bryant, who last caught an NFL pass in 2018, the other players have totaled 43 receptions.

Cowboys' 2024 offseason plan: 5 things Dallas must do to make the most of Jerry Jones' 'do with less' plan – Garrett Podell, CBS Sports
Dallas is going to be a tough mountain to climb with this philosophy.
The 2024 NFL season will be different for the Dallas Cowboys.
There is a cliché among the Cowboys that every year is “their year'' as they aim to make it to the Super Bowl, but the mindset at the top has changed. Team owner and general manager Jerry Jones has long said that when it comes to the Cowboys' team-building approach, “we're thinking long-term and we're really hesitant to put everything on the line for one year.”
Jones' methodology was briefly, or rather in name only, changed after three straight 12-win seasons ended without at least reaching the NFC title game, making the 2021-23 Cowboys the best in history. It was the first winning team.
“We anticipate that everyone will be fully available as we look at the important contracts that we want to work on going forward,” Jones said at this year's Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, in February. “We expect to go all-in at the end of this year. We're going to go all in on that. We're going to go all-in on different people. We're going to go all in. .I've seen some things out of some players that I'd like to commit to. Yes, we're going to be looking at us next year rather than building for the future. .”
Why the Cowboys are so reluctant to negotiate a contract extension – Ben Grimaldi, WFAA
The Cowboys' approach in this regard doesn't make much sense.
As you've probably heard, the Dallas Cowboys' offseason didn't get off to a great start, but it was somewhat expected. With a plethora of free agents, the Cowboys were destined to lose several players on the open market.
What was unexpected was that the team was unable to develop its best players. The Cowboys entered the offseason with their Big Three, re-signing quarterback Dak Prescott, wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, and pass rusher Micah Parsons, who will be extended. So far, there has been no re-up, and no deal appears to be imminent.
It's not at all surprising that Jerry and Stephen Jones haven't put together a deal with a big-name player, but they are often very slow to put deals together. But what's strange is that there doesn't seem to be any obvious sense of urgency to accomplish any of them.
For a team facing salary cap pressure, a contract extension with either Lamb or Prescott could free up space for the Cowboys to sign more helpers in free agency and improve a roster expected to compete in 2024. There is. Like a priority.
