The Dallas Cowboys were a wallflower in free agency. The Cowboys have only signed one outside free agent since March, linebacker Eric Kendricks. However, they brought back some of their own.
The most important returning player for the Cowboys is undoubtedly cornerback Jordan Lewis. With Trevon Diggs bouncing back from injury this season and a completely new look Darron Brand blossoming in his absence, many wondered who would be the team's primary nickel corner. Lewis fills that spot the same way he did last season.
But Brand was a slot corner candidate when 2023 began, only being moved to the outside in the aftermath of Diggs' injury. Dallas intended for Diggs to be in charge of one team and veteran Stephon Gilmore, acquired in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts last offseason, to be in charge of the other team. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see the combination work together for a long time.
Upon hearing the news that Lewis would be back for another season, some fans wondered if that meant Dallas had made a decision regarding Gilmore and decided to live without him. That may or may not be the case, but if not, Gilmore might as well get busy, as he's likely to have a suitor soon.
Jadeveon Clowney wants Stephon Gilmore to join Carolina Panthers
Last week, longtime pass rusher and former No. 1 overall pick Jadeveon Clowney found a new home, this time with the Carolina Panthers.
Clowney famously starred in South Carolina, so this is a bit of a hometown for him. He also attended high school in the state, so it's not hard to see why he would be interested in the Panthers as an option.
This same logic can be used with Stephon Gilmore. Like Clowney, Gilmore also went to South Carolina. In fact, Gilmore attended the exact same high school that Clowney attended in-state (South Point). Additionally, Gilmore previously played for the Panthers during the 2021 season in a trade with the New England Patriots.
If it were up to Clowney, Gilmore would return to the Panthers. He apparently intends to do his best to bring him home with him.
Jadeveon Clowney on Stephon Gilmore: “I'm going to try to elevate him too.''
Gilmore reportedly said he was trying to get the Panthers to bring him back.

This news was announced shortly after the Panthers reported their interest in Gilmore, but Joe Parson's implication is that Clowney is trying to get him from Gilmore (like Gilmore). The word “listen'' is interesting because it states that it was communicated. Let the Panthers bring him back (like they did with Gilmore).
Sorry to make this a complicated story, but considering Gilmore's past with the Panthers, it certainly seems like it. In other words, he has a “back” to go to.
But does that mean Gilmore is out of the Cowboys' thoughts? Or is he trying to create some leverage or market for his services? Either way, this is a good mood for anyone who wants to see Stephon back in a Cowboys jersey. It doesn't make things better.
