The Dallas Mavericks are in the midst of a seven-game winning streak heading into tonight's matchup with the Golden State Warriors, and everyone is clicking at the perfect time.
Luka Doncic leads the way with help from Kyrie Irving, and Dallas' two trade deadline acquisitions compliment this team nicely. P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford are a perfect fit and give this team a huge boost, but the Mavs haven't always been so lucky with trades.
Back in 2014, the Mavs made a huge trade with the Boston Celtics to acquire a point guard who was supposed to take them to the next level. In fact, he was a big reason why the Mavs lost in the first round of the playoffs, but today he announced his retirement.
On Tuesday, Rajon Rondo announced his retirement from the NBA on the “All the Smoke” podcast with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson. Rondo said the reason for his retirement was to spend more time with his children.
During his 16-year NBA career, Rondo averaged 9.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, 7.9 assists, and 1.6 steals per game while shooting 45.6 percent from the field. Rondo will go down as one of the greatest passers of all time, and he has received many accolades that confirm his greatness.
Rondo was a four-time NBA All-Star, three-time assist champion, one-time steal champion, and two-time NBA champion. Although he was excellent on both ends of the floor, his time as a Maverick will always be remembered for the bad rather than the good.
Rondo quit his teammates during the 2015 NBA Playoffs and was never a good fit from the get-go. After Game 2 of the playoffs against the Houston Rockets, it was reported that Rondo would be out with a back injury. It was later reported that there were no injuries to his back, but the team and Rondo mutually decided to part ways.
After the playoffs, Rondo did not receive a playoff share offer, but other teammates did. His time in Dallas was disastrous to say the least, made worse by frequent disagreements with former head coach Rick Carlisle.
Rondo will always be remembered by NBA fans for his flashy passing and great defense, but Mavs fans will remember him differently as he retires today.
Stay tuned for updates on the Dallas Mavericks for the rest of this season.
