The Dallas Cowboys were unable to acquire the top outside free agent available at running back, but they did sign Tony Pollard to the Tennessee Titans and are expected to sign him with the Tennessee Titans. But according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Cowboys could bring in a veteran at that position, and it's a very familiar face.
Fowler reported Saturday that Dallas and former first-round pick Ezekiel Elliott have mutual interest in reuniting the two.
Elliott played his first seven years in the NFL with Dallas, winning two rushing titles in his first three seasons, leading to a $90 million, six-year contract extension in 2019. He then finished fourth in rushing and second overall. He achieved the desired yards that season, but then the struggles ensued. Elliott began to suffer from nagging injuries that prevented him from reaching 1,000 yards in 2020. He returned to that level the following year, but it was clear that Pollard was more capable, which led to them sharing the backfield in 2022. .
The Cowboys wanted Elliott back for less than last season, but the two sides were unable to reach a compromise. Elliott ran for 642 yards on 184 carries last season with the New England Patriots, both career lows.
Elliott was very effective in short yardage situations for the Cowboys, as the majority of his 12 rushing touchdowns came in the red zone during his final season with the Cowboys. With Rico Doodle re-signed and a rookie added in the draft, Elliott could potentially revisit the same role as part of the committee. So it will be interesting to see if he can rekindle this marriage.
