For the past few months, Illumina employees have been collaborating with the team behind the podcast. naked genetics Upcoming episodes will feature six stories about multifaceted applications of sequencing technology. This collaboration aims to demonstrate the utility of genome sequencing across diverse fields and is consistent with Illumina's mission to expand the public's understanding of genomics.
In each story, listeners are invited on an expedition that covers each step of the DNA sequencing process, from sample collection to library preparation, imaging, and analysis using advanced Illumina systems. Stories, often recorded on-site during sample collection, immerse listeners in the excitement of scientific discoveries and speculate on the meaning of the discoveries through discussions with key contributors.
Here are the episodes' tentative release dates, working titles, and featured Illumina employees:
- Now available: “ADHD Benefits and Mining the Microbiome” by Dan Letchworth, Editorial Content Manager
- May: “Antibiotic Resistance” with Senior Staff Scientist Scott Kürsten
- June: 'Food shelf life' with senior scientist Trevor Ho
- July: “Clean Hands vs. Dirty Hands” with Scientific Research Director Ross Jackson
- August: “Ancient DNA” with staff bioinformatics support scientist Michal Szpak
- September: “Synthetic DNA” with Ilaria Grizzi, Director of Systems Integration
Illumina previously collaborated with Naked Scientist in 2019 to provide a variety of stories on decoding the genome of black Labrador puppies, analyzing seawater, and other topics. Hosted by Will Tingle naked genetics is one of the many podcasts produced by The Naked Scientists, a brand founded by Chris Smith. Mr. Tingle and Mr. Smith are driven by a shared vision to bridge the gap between genetics enthusiasts and those less familiar with the field.
Tingle emphasizes the mission of the podcast, saying: “Being able to shed light on genomics in an interesting, applicable, and meaningful way is why we decided to reignite the spark and reconnect with Illumina. I think the thing is to highlight not only how things are changing in the world of genomics, but also how the world around us is changing in terms of climate, health, and technology. .”
On the Illumina side, Ross Jackson and communications intern Laura Malausen coordinated the story, and both enjoyed the experience. “It's really exciting to be a part of that,” Jackson says. “Illumina wants to help people understand the value genomics brings to medicine, science, and all of our lives.”
Marausen added: “It has been extremely rewarding to contribute to this project and witness its progress. Seeing how our teamwork reflects our shared passion for genomics. It’s really exciting.”
as naked genetics Continuing to unravel the mysteries of genomics, this production promises to captivate and educate viewers, offering a unique perspective on the profound impact of sequencing technology on many aspects of our lives.
