The Dallas Cowboys are set on quarterback for the 2024 season, but unless you believe the Dak Prescott trade gossip, they're far from that after this year.
That's why the Cowboys could be targeting a very deep quarterback at this position this year. And if the Cowboys are going to look specifically at a signal caller, South Carolina's Spencer Rattler might make the most sense.
Rattler was once a top five-star recruit in high school, but struggled to live up to the hype in college. After a dismal three years at the University of Oklahoma, Rattler transferred to South Carolina, where he began to further develop his talents. But all the reasons he was a top recruit coming out of high school make him an interesting NFL prospect.
“Rattler has a home run swing,” Bleacher Report wrote. “His arm talent is a siren song. But even beyond his natural arm talent, Rattler's pro-style experience, pocket management, and aggressive creativity all add up to a legitimately good NFL quarterback.” He's creating contours. He just needs a few years of stability and proper coaching.''Color in the rest of the picture. ”
Rattler, a 2020 high school graduate, didn't have much consistency. Once I got to South Carolina, I felt more comfortable. And it will only get better at the NFL level.
Back in 2016, the Cowboys drafted Dak Prescott in the fourth round. They didn't expect him to be a starter, let alone his rookie season, but that's what happened.
The team also hired former No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance, but considering he was considered an “emergency” quarterback a year ago, there's no doubt the team could pursue another player. There is reason to think. Lance will also be a free agent at the end of the 2024 season, so drafting a quarterback would be long-term insurance.
With that time, Rattler could learn from Prescott and understand the Cowboys' style of offense, potentially making them one of the league's best teams again in 2024. And if Prescott is unavailable beyond 2024 for some reason, Rattler could be. He is a worthy successor and deserves a chance.
The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit from April 25th to 27th.
