don't start a podcast
Most people shouldn't start a podcast. Too many people get caught up in trying to become the next Stephen Bartlett without questioning how this fits into broader corporate strategy.
For this to work, you need a clear understanding of how it fits into your overall strategy.
- How will this help my company?
- How does it advance the mission?
- Who are we actually trying to reach? (Are we trying to get investors to trust you, do we want potential talent to know about you, or are we trying to get customers to understand you?) Do you want me to do that?)
- Is this the best use of our time? Do you have the ability to take it on as a marketing or content activity for your business?
- What does success look like to us?
Understand why the podcast format is right for you
LinkedIn and Twitter are great for gaining attention and are easy to consume. This can be seen as top-of-funnel marketing. Podcasts and long-form videos are the best forms of content that can help you build deep trust in your brand and position yourself as an expert in your industry or niche. Potential customers, partners and investors Really Know yourself and what you stand for.
Record episodes that no one will hear
Record five episodes that you never plan on releasing. If you're interviewing a guest, ask five people you know and their girlfriends to record with you. These are test runs that will help you find your voice, your moderating style (if you're interviewing people), get used to using certain tools, and feel comfortable speaking into a microphone. It also takes the pressure off of starting. Over-planning at the beginning is just procrastination.
Make important decisions before you start
- Do you want a guest? If you don't have guests, you need to be a good host with confidence and charisma. There is less competition in this type of podcast space.
- Want a co-host? It's great to have people pushing back and bringing different perspectives to the conversation. However, in the startup world, coordinating your calendar can be a nightmare.
Don't try to make a grand drama
You're not Joe Rogan, and the people who can binge-watch new seasons of their favorite Netflix series are unlikely to take a chance on your new five-hour episode. The best medium to start a podcast is 20-30 minutes. It's long enough to get good information and short enough to listen to on your commute. However, there is no right answer. Remember, the longer the episode, the more attention you need to give to your audience. and The more things we have to deliver, the more.
pay the editor
Startup founders don't have time to learn how to edit. Unless you're a full-time content creator, hire someone with the expertise to handle this for you.
