The Dallas Cowboys are in a pretty dire situation with quarterback Dak Prescott's contract, which could result in him leaving the team after the 2024 season, and for years to come. It will count towards the team's salary cap. And the Cowboys appear to be on the verge of making the same mistake with CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons.
As Pro Football Talk's NFL insider Mike Florio points out, the Dallas Cowboys need to sign contract extensions with CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons, but they're not “postponed, postponed, postponed.” He has given no indication that he intends to do anything else.” This is exactly what it is. They had a thing with Dak Prescott that got them into this mess.
“That's how they got into their current mess with Prescott. After three seasons as a fourth-round, day-one starter, the Cowboys didn't offer him a fair contract, and his four-year contract They put the matter on hold until it expired. They then used the franchise tag and did not sign a long-term contract by the mid-July deadline, so the matter was postponed again. When faced with the prospect of not having the ability to punt for another year (a third tag would have given him a 44 percent raise over a second), the Cowboys panicked and sent Prescott for four. “It was a $1 million contract that guaranteed him $160 a year and would be available on the open market without an extension,” Florio wrote in Pro Football Talk.
“Right now, they seem happy that he's out of contract and on the market in 2025. Basically, he's going to be next year's Kirk Cousins.”
Obviously, this was a pretty terrible situation and caused a lot of reactions on social media as a result.
What's frustrating about the mess Dallas is in is that it was completely predictable, and for years they have defended their inactivity in free agency as preparing for the future.
That future is here. Their readiness has not yet been shown. It's their mess and theirs alone. https://t.co/xVRRHtjjrE

I finally got to see it. Stop blaming the players for wanting compensation when the Cowboys could have locked them down for less a year ago https://t.co/bAbYuIhtwg

Florio was right about one thing. The Cowboys lack a sense of urgency when it comes to signing young players that they have publicly stated they want to develop and put on the show year after year.
Surely they will close the deal eventually. But maybe it's time for Jerry and Steven to get younger… https://t.co/VnOQ5kIEXx

They gave young players Zeke Elliott, Jaylon Smith, and Michael Gallup terrible contracts economically. That didn't help either. https://t.co/oPP2LgfhBG

We'll have to see what the Cowboys do in this situation.
