The NFL Draft is getting closer and closer, presenting an opportunity for growth for the Dallas Cowboys. Patrick Walker of dallascowboys.com projects the odds of drafting a linebacker to be “very high” with his seven picks spread out over seven rounds.
The Cowboys dealt a blow to linebacker when they released Leighton Vander Esch, who failed his physical designation. He resigned three days later. The Cowboys signed Eric Kendricks because it was initially thought he could become a 49er in San Francisco.
Kendrick spent five seasons in Minnesota alongside Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. Kendricks was a team captain for the Los Angeles Chargers last season, totaling 117 tackles, 3.5 sacks and one forced fumble.
Linebacker needs aside, CBS Sports' latest mock draft projects the Cowboys to take Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr.
CBS Sports' Leger Douzable said, “This feels like the last season for Dak Prescott as the Cowboys' starter. Penix isn't necessarily a quarterback who needs a redshirt year, but he'll likely be in 2024. He will earn a redshirt in 2020.” Even though he's an older prospect, he does have an advantage because of his big pitching ability. Taking a swing at the most important position in this game probably isn't the worst idea for the Cowboys right now. ”
The Cowboys have one pick in the first, second, third, fifth and sixth rounds, and two in the seventh round. The NFL Draft will be held in Detroit on April 25th. An argument could be made that there aren't enough draft picks to fill the holes created by free agency and other spring shuffles…which means linebacker is on the list of concerns.
