Ska really started to break into the mainstream in the 90s. But even during that great ska boom, only a handful of bands actually became radio hits. One of his few groups to accomplish such a feat is the Orange County-based group Save Ferris, who had a huge hit with a cover of his 1982 one-hit wonder “Come on Irene” by Dexy's Midnight Runners .This week to protect ska, Save Ferris vocalist Monique Powell talks about the group, the Orange County scene, MTV's popular videos, and monumental covers. Powell runs through the band's somewhat checkered history, from its formation in 1995 to its disbandment in 2003 and its reunion in 2013, which led to a spate of legal issues. The vocalist also reflects on the band's accomplishments, including how 'Come on Eileen' came to be included on their debut LP. “I don't know if I said I was going to record it, but I just remember saying I wanted to play that song,” Powell says. “I love that song so much that I just wanted to play it live.”
But through all the ups and downs, Powell and Save Ferris delivered an unforgettable and surprisingly popular ska performance with plenty of Orange County vibes. Powell talks about how she coped with ska's eventual demise as a style, and shares stories that span her career.
