The Winnipeg Jets had to face the top team in the Western Conference on Thursday night, looking to bounce back from a shaky performance against the Predators. The Dallas Stars could secure the top spot in the Central Division with a win, and will be eager to win as they challenge the New York Rangers for the Presidents Trophy. Let’s find out how things went….
The initial puck drop forced both teams to stick to their defensive systems, limiting scoring opportunities either way early in the period. Winnipeg had its best early scoring opportunity when Monaghan was set up in the low slot, but Oettinger was able to evade the attempt. Dallas had its best chance moments later when a bicycle shift caused several mad scrambles in front of Brossoit, but the tender was sprawled on the ice to keep the biscuits out of the net. became. The Jets' second line shifted the offensive zone again, and Monahan was once again denied from the net front and closed in again when the rebound settled in the crease. A Stars player tried to evade danger, but his attempt was blocked by Ehlers on target, and a quick backhand gave Winnipeg a 1-0 lead 15 minutes into the game. Dallas had a chance to break through and tie the game at 2-on-1, but a good backcheck made it 2-on-2 and Brossoit easily handled the shot from the left faceoff dot. The Jets ended the frame with a few cycle shifts in the Stars' zone. Money Pack is how we view the situation after the first.
1st Period MoneyPuck Statistics: Score: 1 to 0 Jets, 8-for-9 shooting, Jets-worthy 55%, Expected Goals – All Situations (0.59-0.40 WPG), and 5-on-5 (0.59-0.40 WPG)
Once again, the defense was suffocating, and the goalkeeper was rewarded for not taking a shot in the opening three minutes. Dallas finally got a chance when Brossoit fended off a one-timer from the right faceoff dot and Winnipeg countered with a 3-on-2 rush from the third line. Unfortunately, the pass bounced off Appleton in the neutral zone, leaving the Stars with two men. A nice backcheck by Samberg had the defenseman come back just in time to dive and block the cross-ice pass attempt. Sammy saved the goal, but slid into his own net and flicked the net off its moorings, giving the local team their first power play of the tournament. The Stars didn't get a shot due to great work by the PK Kerr, but Monaghan was able to get his shot (on the internet) for Winnipeg while they put the man down. After no shots for the first seven minutes, the Jets were finally able to start tilting the ice in the other direction, starting with good forechecking and cycling by their top line. This pressure caused Winnipeg to begin a line change while retaining the ball, during which Scheifele sent the puck high on the left boards to Appleton, and the center headed to the bench. Apples slipped a pass to Samberg, who was not covered at the point, and the defenseman quickly stepped in and took a shot that found the back of the net. To my older eyes, it looked like the shot was deflected by Dallas' Duchenne high in the zone, but slow-motion replay also shows Gustafsson redirecting the puck right in front of the goalie. Shown. With his 10 minutes left and him up 2-0, Brossoit had to continue playing well to keep the game scoreless (Stopped Ben with blue paint and calmly caught Tanev's outburst.). Winnipeg responded with his own pressure (Morrissey with a one-timer, Stanley Lister, Connor stoned into the low slot, Scheifele taken away with a quick pad save.) before the Stars ended the frame with more offensive zone time (There was a point shot that hit Brossoit's back post, but he just smothered the puck as it conveniently bounced between his legs.).
MoneyPuck stats after 2 periods: Score: 2 to 0 Jets, Jets Shooting 22-16, Jets Winning 52%, Expected Goals – All Situations (1.34-1.18 WPG) and 5-on-5 (1.31-1.06 WPG)
In the final period, the teams traded low-danger chances early, but it was Dallas who controlled the puck more often (Shooting 4-1 in the first 6 minutes). Heiskanen was flying all over the ice and got a low slot for a quality look from Brossoit on one of his rushes, but the bid didn't give the Stars the spark they needed. When Scheifele was sent on the road and Dallas' lethal PP hit the ice, it looked like the home team finally got the rest it needed. The Stars did much better on their second attempt, but the Jets' penalty killer did enough to preserve the shutout (After a great save by Bross on a bumper one timer, DeMelo smashed an attempt from the same spot with his defensive stick.). Just as the penalty was about to expire, Appleton was tripped by a star player and was able to clear the puck and relieve the pressure. Winnipeg's first PP of the game was nothing to write home about as they struggled to gain zone and turned the puck over when they gained zone (Scheifele). The second unit had a little more success in a short amount of time, with Iafallo testing Oettinger with a shot after a short cycle. With less than seven minutes left, Lowry Rein killed time with a cycle shift and Gustafsson did a great job on the boards. After Scheifele sent a few incomprehensible passes and were easily intercepted, Dallas was able to get back on offense, but Sequin could not solve Brossoit. The Stars' coach made an early gamble by pulling the goaltender with three minutes left, allowing him to set up Winnipeg's zone with an extra attacker. But they couldn't find a way to break through the Jets' defense, and Appleton intercepted the puck and sent it to Conner to break out of the zone. Winnipeg's leading scorer allowed Scheifele to break down the open side of the ice and immediately shove the puck to him, effectively sealing the game with an empty netter. Dallas then took another cycle shift, but the Stars called up too many players with a minute left. Bowness had seen enough of his power play unit that night that he chose to end the game at the Lowry line instead. We didn't get much of an offensive result, but Winnipeg didn't let anything shortstop either, so it all worked out.
MoneyPuck stats after 3rd period: 65% deserved win for Stars, Expected Goals – All Situations (2.43-2.24 WPG) and 5-on-5 (1.87-1.46 WPG)

Game observations:
- Let's start with the test mentioned in the preview and see how it fared for the Winnipeg Jets. They need to limit Dallas to 35 shots, get 30 on their own, stop the Stars from scoring 4 goals, score 3 on their own, and break even on xG at 5v5. He was asked to be a break-even point and break even on special teams. I took out my red pencil and here is my score: Question 1: a (24 shots), Question 2: B (24 shots), question 3: A+ (Number of goals allowed: 0), question 4: B- (Scored 3 goals), question 5: C (1.87-1.46 DAL), Question 6: B+ (break even). Overall, I am very satisfied with their efforts and happy to give them the highest overall rating. a Because of night work (However, a B+ might be more appropriate in real life.).
- Laurent Brossoit (2.22 goals saved above average) didn't face that much rubber conor hellebike As was the case the other night, the Jets' reserves played extremely well en route to their third shutout of the season.
- Other players worth mentioning are: Nikolai Ehlers (200 career goals), David Gustafson (He scored a goal on his birthday and always seems to be in the right position defensively.) pairing with Logan Stanley & Dylan Samberg (61.1% xG, the only d pair on the right side of that stat). Big Stan also led Winnipeg in shots (four) and showed a great knack for getting the puck on net.
- Who currently has the second-longest winning streak in the NHL…our Winnipeg Jets!! Only the New York Islanders' current five-game winning streak has been broken by six games.
It was a very impressive performance by the Winnipeg Jets in Texas, but all that really matters is whether they can follow that up with a similar effort in Colorado. The two franchises are tied for second place, with home ice advantage looming large on the team that can best finish the final three games. The Jets currently have a two-game advantage in regulation wins, so any tie would likely go as expected for Winnipeg.
