Welcome to the next installment of our Podcast Showcase series. In this series, podcasters share their podcasts in their own words. This time we'll talk about “flip the switch.”
Summarize your podcast in 3 sentences
“Flip the Switch” is a podcast that challenges societal norms by celebrating multi-talented individuals, rejecting societal labels, and promoting meaningful careers that are free from traditional norms. and exercise.
Each week, Shanna speaks to portfolio career trailblazers who are pursuing all their goals at the same time. Born from the personal story of Shana, who lives a double life, Shana took the traditional legal path that a “good South Asian” would take, but deep down she knew she wanted to be a dance DJ. I was thinking.
Who is your ideal listener? Who likes your show?
Disruptors, freelancers, side contractors. Someone who is trying to take power back into his own hands in his career.
Our guests are career chameleons, and so are our listeners. We cover a wealth of topics ranging from authenticity, personal brand, identity, culture, mental health, burnout, and self-discovery in 30-45 minute episodes.
What inspired you to start this podcast?
I grew up living a double life for over 10 years. I was in college studying a law degree during the day, but by night I was a dance DJ, so I was jokingly referred to as the real-life Hannah Montana.
I now proudly embrace the multifaceted identity hyphen of social impact investor, entrepreneur, DJ, marketer, innovator, radio host, and podcaster.
I want Flip the Switch to be an event that celebrates multiple hyphenates who refuse to fit in and instead choose to “melt out” by being their authentic selves. You don't even have to be a celebrity to earn this title. Whether you're rebelling against traditional cultural norms or living unapologetically, the podcast can help others explore portfolios, non-traditional careers, and build confidence to live unapologetically. I believe it can be done.
What did you learn about your subject because of this podcast?
- Hidden Gem: It turns out that not every guest's journey is as bright and exciting as their biographies might first suggest. In most cases, their drive to succeed comes from a deeper place. Success in marginalized communities can require a survival mindset, followed by a process of unlearning the norms and ways of thinking that have long been taught.
- Blend like a Beckham: Our mix of cultures and social groups is ultimately our strength, and I aim to bring that out in every guest. We're seeing this kind of interaction between industries and genres, and it's about time our careers and lives in general do the same.
- Passion over profit: Following your passion is an ongoing theme seen across all of our guests. They focus on community in everything they do and foster an inclusive culture that bravely pioneers new narratives.
What has your experience been with podcasting? What do you like and dislike about the process?
I'm so happy because I'm always inspired by my weekly guests. I was always pretty nervous about launching a podcast because it feels pretty niche, but I'm starting to realize that so many people can relate to it and I really hope there's a long road ahead. I am.
What I don't like is having to plan the next shoot as soon as one shoot ends and feeling like I'm always behind. But I love the creative side of the work and have a lot of fangirl moments, so being able to talk to my creative icons is a big plus.
If someone wanted to start listening to your podcast, which episode would you recommend they start with? Why?
Bodaria, doctor and DJ. This was the first proper episode with a live audience, and it was such a great episode. He was a very memorable guest and his first DJ gig was at Tomorrowland Festival!
We cover being South Asian, the pressures of being a doctor or lawyer, and using your mental health to take back control of your career.
What other podcasts do you listen to?
- Jay Shetty's “Intentionally”
- Dr. Chatterjee's “Feel Better Live” and other works
- Berner Phone by Hannah Berner
