“Our students and team members are safe,” Dallas Independent School District officials said in a statement posted on social media.
School district police told KXAS-TV the shooting happened just after 10:30 a.m.
“Police are on scene to ensure the safety of the school,” the post, published around 11:15 a.m. PT, said. Authorities urged people to stay away from the campus.
Dallas Fire Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said the injured student was taken to a hospital, according to the Dallas Morning News. Their conditions were not immediately known, but officials told WFAA they are expected to recover.
No other injuries were reported and one person was later taken into custody, KXAS reported. Police did not immediately identify the person or release his age. An anonymous source told WFAA that the suspect is another student who is believed to be known to the victim.
It remains unclear what led to the violence Friday afternoon or how the gun ended up on campus. One parent told KDFW-TV that the school has metal detectors and other protective equipment to keep out weapons.
Authorities continue to investigate.
