CLEVELAND – Northeast Ohio ODOT officials announced today that they will invest $1.7 billion in 248 projects in 17 counties during the 2024 construction season.
Of the 248 projects to be implemented this year, 193 are new projects for 2024, 32 are safety projects aimed directly at reducing serious accidents and fatalities, 86 are road improvement projects, and 60 are new projects for 2024. is a bridge and culvert improvement project.
“An investment in efficient infrastructure is an investment in quality of life,” said Governor Mike DeWine. “Once completed, these projects will significantly reduce traffic congestion and improve road safety.”
This year's construction program includes 21 projects deemed “large” with an amount exceeding $10 million.
Highlights of the Northeast Ohio project include:
- Cuyahoga County: I-90 pavement replacement between Hilliard Road I-71/I-490 interchanges in the cities of Rocky River, Lakewood, and Cleveland. Starts in summer 2024 and ends in summer 2027. The cost was $136.3 million.
- Summit County: Replacement of the SR 8 high-level bridge over various railroads, North Street, and the Little Cuyahoga River in the City of Akron. Starts in summer 2023 and ends in summer 2028. The cost was $157.7 million.
- Summit County: I-76/I-77 Akron Loop Road Reconstruction. Starts in summer 2021 and ends in summer 2025. The cost was $160 million.
- Summit Cautie: I-77 widening between Everett Road and State Route 21 in Bath and Litchfield Township. Starts in fall 2023 and ends in summer 2026. The cost was $75 million.
- Trumbull County: SR 46/SR 82 Branch Diamond Interchange in Howland Township. Starts in summer 2023 and ends in fall 2026. The cost was $20.4 million.
- Wayne County: SR 21 Renovation between Stark County Line and Summit County Line. Starts in spring 2024 and ends in spring 2026. The cost was $29.3 million.
“Orange barrels, synonymous with summer, may be a source of frustration and inconvenience for some, but they are a sign of progress and improvement,” said ODOT Director Dr. Jack Marchbanks.
This construction season isn't just about building new roads. Approximately 93 cents of every dollar is invested in preserving existing roads and bridges.
