Earlier this offseason, Dallas Cowboys team owner and general manager Jerry Jones boldly declared that the team plans to “go all out” next season in hopes of winning a Super Bowl. As a result, many rightly expected the team to make a splash in free agency, but that wasn't the case. And now team executive Stephen Jones is admitting a pretty brutal truth about that whole situation.
Appearing on Tuesday's 105.3 The Fan, Stephen Jones addressed Jerry Jones' comments, saying, “Everyone has their own definition of what that means, but we're doing our best.'' I've never been unaware of that.” He also acknowledged the brutal truth that teams will have to “hold money” this offseason to extend contracts with some current players.
“We spend the most money every year. All 32 of us can only spend the same amount over five years. After all, we max out the salary cap every year. We did it. Along with having a good roster, we're also looking at signing our own players. But it's not going to happen overnight. “If you want to sign a player like that, you certainly have to hold back money if you want to have a realistic chance of signing them,” Jones said.
Needless to say, it doesn't seem like the Cowboys are planning on going “all in,” at least not in the way fans were hoping.
