BREWER — Every Earth Day and every day, Northern Light Health sparks a conversation about how climate change will impact our patients, staff, and organization, and why we should take it seriously. Masu. Last week, Northern Light Health launched a sustainability healthcare podcast as part of its Healthy, Happy, and Wise podcast series.
In the first episode, podcast host Tim Doak, chief environmental sustainability officer at Northern Light Health, joins Jonathan Slutsman, M.D., director of the Center for Environment and Health and medical director of environmental sustainability at Massachusetts General Hospital. We talk about the relationship between our health and wellness. A changing climate and what hospitals can do to be part of the solution. He said: “This is especially important because health care is a major contributor to climate change, which is contrary to our mission. If we don't do what we need to do, people's lives will suffer. This is the single biggest health threat facing the world this century. We must overcome it. We must lead by example.”
Listeners can access the podcast through our website (https://northernlighthealth.org/HealthyHappyWise), Apple, YouTube, and Spotify.
In 2023, Northern Light Health signed the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Health Sector Climate Change Commitment to reduce emissions by 50% by 2023 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. From 2021 (base year) to 2022, we have already achieved an emissions reduction of 10.2%. Reduced overall greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, our commitment to sustainability includes a robust climate resilience plan.
