Doncic led the NBA in points with 33.9 points per game, was second in assists per game (9.8 points) and led all guards in rebounds per game (9.2 points).
DALLAS — Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic has been named one of three finalists for the 2023-24 NBA MVP award.
Doncic was selected as a finalist along with Denver center Nikola Jokic and Oklahoma City point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The winner has not yet been announced.
Doncic led the league in scoring (33.9 points per game), second in the NBA in assists (9.8 points per game) and led all guards in rebounding (9.2 points per game). He also ranked second in 3-point shots made per game (4.1). If Doncic wins, it will be the first MVP of his career.
Gilgeous-Alexander will also win his first MVP award, while Jokic is aiming for a third time (2021, 2022).
This much is already certain. It will be his sixth consecutive year for an international player to win the MVP award, extending the longest streak in NBA history. Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is of Greek-Nigerian descent, won in 2019 and 2020, Serbian Jokic won in 2021 and 2022, and Embiid won last season. Embiid was born in Cameroon but became an American citizen in 2022.
Finalists will be selected based on votes from sportswriters and broadcasters, and ballots will be posted on pr.nba.com after each award winner is announced at the end of the season.
The “Luca for MVP'' train is running at breakneck speed along the tracks, with Cuban acting as the conductor. For the past few weeks, the former Mavericks governor has been posting almost daily on X urging Doncic to be named MVP. Before Dallas' win over the Miami Heat, the entire team wore “Puravi MVP” shootaround shirts. This is the Slovenian word for “real MVP” or “true MVP.”
If Doncic wins, he will be the second Mavericks player to do so, joining Dirk Nowitzki in 2007, who led the Mavs to a league-best 67-17.
