GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) – The Grand Island City Council has appointed Matthew Gleason as its new finance director. Approval passed 9-0-1, with Mitch Nickerson abstaining.
Gleason currently serves as a business lecturer and director of accounting and auditing services at Peru State University.
He will take over the finance director position from Patrick Brown, who was recently promoted to the post of assistant city administrator and has been juggling both jobs for the past nine months, although Brown said Gleason was the He said he was fully qualified for the job.
“He is a certified public accountant, certified management accountant, certified financial manager and certified internal auditor,” Brown said.
According to the City Council agenda, Gleason will oversee the finance department and be responsible for day-to-day city finance operations.
He will serve as a liaison between the city and various community boards. Brown said the city is lucky to have found a candidate like Gleason.
“Finding a finance officer has been a challenge for many organizations and municipalities, so finding a finance officer with these qualifications and experience will be a great thing for the city moving forward.” “It's going to be,” Brown said.
Brown told Local4 News that hiring Gleason will allow him to focus on other aspects of his job.
“This will allow the administration to do a little bit more high-level planning and financial forecasting for the city and focus a little more on budget and procurement,” Brown said.
If Gleason's hire is approved, he would begin his position on May 6th, with a salary of $129,773.97, according to the City Council's agenda.
