DALLAS — Two high school football players were hospitalized Thursday after being injured in a drive-by shooting while walking home from practice with their coaches in Dallas, law enforcement officials and coaches told WFAA.
Dallas Independent School District officials then canceled Friday classes at the players' Roosevelt High School “due to a credible threat.”
Dallas police say officers were called to a shooting Thursday evening near Cedarcrest Golf Course, about a mile from Roosevelt High School in the 520 block of Bonnie View Road.
Roosevelt football coach Terrence Lowery told WFAA that he was driving two players home from practice when someone pulled up to his car and started shooting. Lowry said he immediately turned around and went back to school.
The player sitting in the passenger seat was shot in the back of the arm and shoulder, and the player sitting in the back seat was shot in the neck, Lowry said. Lowry was not injured, but he was shaken up, saying the bullet went through one of his headrests.
Lowry confirmed to WFAA that both players are sophomores at the school.
Police said the teens were taken to Methodist Hospital, where they are in stable condition and expected to be OK.
In canceling Friday's classes, school officials asked students and faculty “to refrain from coming to campus,” and said they would release more information as it became available.
