Frisco, Texas – Jerry Jones not only said it once in his post-first-round press conference Thursday night, but he said it again afterwards.
Jones referred to the selection of Tyler Guyton as a “sexy” pick, saying that acquiring a left tackle like Guyton, who is 6-7 and has a lot of potential to develop into an elite player, is a different level of excitement. Said to bring.
I'm sorry to say this, but very few people have actually said that about the Center.
To be honest, I can't say that I actually agree with this philosophy. Personally, I like the idea of getting his No. 1 player at a position rather than getting the 7th best tackle in this case.
But consider what Jerry Jones actually said. He's talking about a “sexy” pick, which he was able to acquire, as well as a third-round pick thanks to a trade back.
I was probably in the same place as a lot of players who were hoping to get Graham Barton, but Barton surprisingly still came in at number 24. But as it turns out, the Cowboys didn't value Burton all that much. If at all, he was ahead of a group of five players that included Guyton.
So with Barton and the center position lacking excitement in the war room, plus the opportunity to acquire a third-round pick in a trade back with the Lions, perhaps Jerry and Stephen could pull this off. That was probably all that was needed.
This was a risky move, but we've seen Jerry and Stephen do it in the past. They moved down two spots in 2002 by acquiring Roy Williams, but still acquired him and a third-round pick. They moved down two spots in 2021, adding Micah Parsons to the board and acquiring a third-round pick. In both cases, they still got the player they wanted.
This time, they had four favorites and four picks remaining before their next pick. Is it really possible that they lose all four of his players on the board?
Well, they almost did. One player they liked was tackle Jordan Morgan from Arizona. He went to Green Bay at No. 25, followed by Burton at No. 26 to Tampa Bay. Then, when Darius Robinson was selected with the 27th pick out of Arizona, things became very dangerous for the Cowboys, who had three targets. Leaves the board with three picks. However, Kansas City has been linked to the receiver for a while, and the Cowboys received some relief when the Chiefs moved up to No. 28. They drafted speedy receiver Xavier Worthy, leaving Guyton on the table for the Cowboys to pick.
All that matters is checking the box. And in the case of the Cowboys, especially Jerry Jones, they could do it, in any order, several times.
- Draft players to fill elite positions to fill your needs – check it out!
- Get more draft capital, including a third-round pick – check it out!
- Get a talented player with huge upside and a quick start!
I'm sure there are other “checks”, but these three seem to be the biggest ones. The Cowboys started the day with seven picks in the draft. They already have something they really like that they can plug right in and start at left tackle.
And the best thing for them is that they still have seven picks left on the table.
We'll see what happens on Friday, but it already looks like a winning formula given what they're trying to accomplish.
