Dallas police are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred overnight in east Dallas.
DALLAS — Two women shot to death in Old East Dallas early Saturday morning were killed by one of their boyfriends, according to a newly obtained arrest affidavit.
The Dallas Police Department (DPD) responded to a shooting call on North Washington Avenue at 3 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, police said in a statement.
When officers arrived, they found two women, Sister Amaya Lockett, 24, and Sister Jalisa Lockett, 22, dead from gunshot wounds.
The two girls were young mothers and lived together in an apartment. Jalisa had a 2-year-old daughter, and Amaya had a 10-month-old son.
“This was a situation we didn't expect,” Jaunci Lockett, the girls' father, told WFAA on Sunday.
According to an arrest affidavit, Amaya's boyfriend, Sadiq Shabazz, shot and killed her after an argument at the girls' shared apartment. He then allegedly came out of her bedroom and shot Yalisa as well.
Investigators said Shabazz also shot and killed Yarisa's boyfriend, but he survived by barricading himself in another room. He then helped lead police to Shabazz, and according to an arrest affidavit, Shabazz “became enraged and began firing, admitting that he did not intend to kill, but was unable to take back his shots.” There is.
Their father spoke to WFAA in hopes that their story will inspire others to look for signs of domestic violence.
“This was a situation that we didn't expect. We didn't think it would go to the extent that it did,” Jaunci said. “To help people understand the signs and pay attention to what’s going on… If this helps someone shed light on how quickly lives can be taken, then I think it’s good for me.”
Jaunshi is now working to help her grandchildren grow up without a mother. He has launched his GoFundMe to raise money for them. For more information or to donate, click here.
Police charged Shabazz with multiple murders. He is being held in the Dallas County Jail on $3 million bail.
