Alexis Groteboer was born and raised in Rochester, Minnesota. When she moved to Arizona to attend her college, she avoided the cold of the Midwest in favor of the heat of the Southwest. Soon after, Alexis returned to her hometown of Rochester to be closer to her family.
“I got my real estate license during the COVID-19 pandemic, so my first few years in the business were a real roller coaster,” she says. Alexis has her 7-year-old son and her 4-year-old Frenchie at home, and they keep her busy.
How would you describe your style in three words?
casual, comfortable, relaxed
What do others often comment on about the way you dress?
My mom always says, “The clothes were ugly on the hanger, but you took them off,” which is so funny to me. I’m not afraid of bold florals or patterns that other people might pass off.
How does your role as a real estate agent influence your attire choices?
I worked at the Mayo Clinic for many years, so I’m used to a business casual dress code, and I continue that in the real estate industry. I believe in dressing to make a good impression, so even if it’s a little casual, I never want to seem unprofessional to my clients.
What is your standard approach to choosing your outfit for the day?
It’s comfortable and has pockets that can fit all your pens, chopsticks, and insulin pumps. Jeans and a blazer are usually recommended. If I’m in a home office, it’s yoga pants (who hasn’t actually been to yoga), a sweatshirt, and always slippers.
How would you describe the style scene today?
Mix athleisure with a bit of bohemian flair: baggy jeans, floral prints, chunky or platform sneakers.
How has your style evolved?
I think I’ve matured and become more interesting. I’ve never had a specific “style” but I feel like I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone when it comes to patterns, colors and upgraded accessories.
What is the best wardrobe purchase you have ever made?
A very Minnesotan answer: my long parka coat. I hate winter weather, so I was always repulsed by coats and snow pants as a kid, but a few years ago I bought a really long hoodie that goes all the way to my ankles. It was amazing. Now I don’t hate winter so much.
A sentimental item that speaks to you?
Shortly after my son was born, my grandmother gave me a gold necklace with his name on it, which is very special to me.
Is this a repeat purchase?
Jean jackets. I love throwing one on over a dress or shirt to add a little sparkle.
What items do you reach for most often?
Fun accessories like headbands, earrings, rings, etc. I have a huge jewelry box full of colorful and unique pieces that always add a pop to an outfit.
Are there any items you just can’t part with?
My favorites are black pixie dress pants from Mossimo, an older brand from Target, that have stretched and I think even have a tiny hole in the top seam, but they don’t make them anymore and, of course, they fit better than the others.
Fill in the blank: I feel best when I _____.
Fashion. It’s true that looking good makes you feel good, but the outfit that’s most “me” is probably yoga pants, a jean jacket, and Vans. It’s classy and comfortable, but doesn’t make me look like I just rolled out of bed (hopefully).
What is your favorite season when it comes to clothing?
Spring. I love that it’s warm enough to shed my coat and ugly boots, but not warm enough to wear shorts.
What are you looking forward to taking out of storage for the warmer weather?
Dresses. I love how fun sundresses are an easy way to add pattern and color to an outfit. I also prefer sandals over boots, so I’m super excited to get my flip flops out again.
Parting advice?
Style is a conversation starter, so don’t be afraid to express yourself through what you wear.
