With 23 of the 243 precincts now counted in the runoff election for Dallas County sheriff, incumbent Marian Brown continues to hold a lead over challenger Lupe Valdez. Brown has received about 67% of the vote so far.
About 20,500 of the county’s 1,435,719 voters, or about 1.5%, voted early in the election.
No Republicans ran for the post, so the winner of the runoff election will become Dallas County sheriff.

In the runoff election for the Dallas County sheriff’s post, incumbent Marian Brown is leading against challenger Lupe Valdez after no candidate received more than 50% of the vote in the primary.
Brown received 11,452 votes, or more than 68 percent, of the early votes cast, while Valdez received about 32 percent.
Brown faced off against a number of challengers in the primary, including Sam Muhammad, Rodney Thomas, Roy Williams Jr. and Valdez, who served as sheriff from 2005 to 2017 before running for Texas governor.
No Republicans ran for the post.

In the March primary, Brown received 48,427 votes, or 41.96 percent. Valdez received 43,587 votes, or 37.77 percent. Brown is Dallas County’s first Black sheriff and Valdez is the county’s first Latino sheriff, according to Brown’s campaign website.
The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department, founded in 1846, oversees the Lou Sterrett Justice Center, which averages more than 6,000 inmates and 2,000 employees, according to the department’s website. Additionally, the department oversees all areas within the county.
