ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. — The Hudson Gateway Realtor Foundation, the charitable arm of the Hudson Gateway Association of Realtors, recently presented a check for $1,000 to Rockland Homes for Heroes.
Rockland Homes for Heroes is a 501c3 charitable organization that develops permanent supportive housing for honorably discharged male and female veterans who are unhoused, disabled or at risk of becoming homeless in the southern Hudson Valley.

Founded in 2009, the organization is run entirely by volunteers, primarily military veterans who have contributed to their local communities for decades.
“Rockland Homes for Heroes has received tremendous support from the local community, especially the real estate industry,” said John Allen Murphy, a military veteran who is co-founder and chairman of the charity.
“This is a challenge that requires a lot of help and support,” he told Patch.
In November 2013, they completed the first phase of their master plan, which included the construction of eight new permanent, affordable and supportive housing units on the historic 7.5-acre site formerly known as Camp Shanks in Tappan during World War II.
Phase II, which includes 14 additional units of supportive housing, was recently completed. Each one-bedroom apartment is optimized for people with disabilities, including mobility impairments, hearing impairments and vision impairments. The units also feature modern kitchens, bathrooms and washers/dryers. All are Energy Star efficient and use green building techniques to reduce energy consumption. The $4 million project was funded with private donations and funding from New York State government agencies.
Subsequent donations will be used for the upkeep and maintenance of the facility.
