Here are some recent NHL stories from the AP:
WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — The Winnipeg Jets promoted assistant coach Scott Arniel to head coach on Friday, replacing the retiring Rick Bowness.
The move came about three weeks after Bowness retired. Former Jets left winger Arniel joined Bowness’ staff in 2022.
The 61-year-old Arniel led the Jets to a 98-57-9 record and two playoff appearances in two seasons under Bowness. This season, the Jets finished second in the Western Conference with a 52-24-6 record and Bowness was a finalist for the NHL Coach of the Year award.
However, this success did not translate into a berth in the postseason, as Winnipeg was eliminated in the first round of the postseason in five games for the second consecutive year, this time to the Colorado Avalanche.
Arniel has filled in for Bowness three times over the past two seasons for family and health reasons. During that time, Arniel compiled a record of 15 wins, 7 losses and 3 ties, including 10 wins, 5 losses and 2 ties this season.
Arniel played 11 seasons in the NHL with Winnipeg, Buffalo and Boston, recording 149 goals and 189 assists in 730 games. He also coached the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2010-12, compiling a record of 45 wins, 60 losses and 18 ties.
